What's the word party people! I hope everyone's year is getting off to a great start,mine is for sure. I didn't realize until just a few weeks ago that I have been rocking in the A for 20 years. August 15th will make it 20 years to be exact. In celebration of that period,me alongside my team(Bobby Black,Dj Stefan,and www.thediggersunion.com)have cooked up a real nice treat for you guys.
"Forever. I. Love. Atlanta.(F.I.L.A.),the history of the Dungeon Family" takes you down the musical road that became the soundtrack to Atlanta. Without the Dungeon Family, its safe to say that the Atlanta sound would not have progressed as rapidly as it did. Consisting of Outkast,Goodie Mob,Society of Soul,Organized Noize,Backbone,Cool Breeze,and Ej the Witch doctor,the DF crew paved the way for all modern southern mc's.
Being that these brothers were the first mc's from Atlanta that I ever worked with,I deem it only right that I pay tribute to them first. No other group of mc's from the south has balanced the fine line of raw street lyrics and social commentary.

Bridging the gap between the disco rap of the early 80s and the early sample based hip hop of the mid to late 80s (featured on the two mixes we put together for Classic Material Edition #1) is a rich groove of drum machine led rap tracks characterised by the raw stripped down sound of bass heavy 808 kicks and snappy hand claps. But somewhere else in the melting pot of music released in that same era is the unlikely blend of fast paced electronic beats with dancefloor sensibilities, funk, rap and leftfield European electronica that formed the electro scene of the day.
Whilst the sub-genres are plentiful, this mix doesn’t concentrate too heavily on any one of them; West Coast dancefloor cuts from the likes of Egyptian Lover rub shoulders with European pioneers Kraftwerk and East Coast electro rap and electro funk. As with all the Classic Material mixes, classic cuts stand alongside the rare and lesser heard. Originally issued as a bonus track on the Classic Material Edition #1 CD, we’re pleased to make this mix available online in association with Spine Magazine.

His book is called The Big Payback: A History of the Business of Hip-Hop, and it covers all of the important business dealings that spanned the last 30+ years. It was an honor to be able to sit down with this man for this interview.

Working with the popular 1500, both companies develop a simple but outstanding colorway in the New Balance runner. Dubbed the “Vivre Sans Temps Mort”, meaning Life Without Dead Time in French, the design pays tribute to the joint website Wesoldout.com, founded by La MJC and colette in 2006, which no longer exists today. The Flimby-made design will see a release on Saturday, December 18th exclusively via colette and on the Cool Cats website. Each pair will feature three sets of laces, including: white, red and gray.

Edition #3 of our monthly Classic Material series pays tribute to the hip hop of 1989, another year in which the genre’s dominant sounds changed drastically. As the James Brown influenced sound that had dominated the late 80s played out its final days, producers from all corners of the genre turned their attentions to sampling the bass heavy West Coast sound of Parliament, Funkadelic and Zapp. Acts such as De La Soul and the Jungle Brothers burst on to the scene injecting a light hearted honesty into their lyrical content which paved the way for the emerging ‘new school’ sound of the early 90s. Early releases from the likes of X Clan hinted at the ‘afrocentric’ sound that would come to prominence in the following years.

Kennedy’s love of sailing forms the basis of the sneaker’s design with the use of sailing flags as a theme through the liner. Different materials also occupy the upper such as ripstop nylon, suede and mesh. Available starting March 2011.

After sitting down the joined creative force grew beyond what either brand had expected. The natural progression was to not only release a single collaborative product but a capsule collection. The outcome is a jointly branded micro product line, anchored by the iconic Hieroglyphics logo immortalized into the “Hieroman” vinyl. Gatorade and their sport scientists have a pretty good idea about what’s going on with their traditional athletes… Action sports on the other hand, that’s a totally different story. This year, Gatorade’s theme is “Go All Day.” In celebrating that theme, Gatorade wanted to start doing research on the non-traditional sports like BMX, so they hit up team rider Nigel Sylvester and asked him: If you could go anywhere in the world to ride bikes with friends, where would you go? After lots of research and different ideas being thrown around, Japan was chosen as the destination. To document the trip, Gatorade invited a few key BMX media outlets, including Defgrip, to go along for the ride. New Balance and Burn Rubber have joined creative forces to launch the limited-edition New Balance MT580 Burn Rubber. Since 2004 Burn Rubber has been Metro Detroit’s exclusive premium sneaker boutique. Burn Rubber, a phrase from the Motor City’s car culture comparing sneakers on a person to tires on a car, is known throughout the community as the place to get the most sought after sneakers and clothing.

The New Balance 580 Burn Rubber is built on one of the most classic New Balance silhouettes. The sneaker is lined with a sleek orange, gray and black argyle in homage to the shop colors of Burn Rubber. Key features include: white patent heel and tongue labels, reflective grey foxing, and a customized hang tag featuring the shop’s mascot, the Chef. We took the opportunity to chat with Burn Rubber owner Rick Williams about the project, via an interview offered below, with further information available through the collaboration’s microsite.

Rick, can you please tell us a bit about yourself and Burn Rubber?

My name is Rick Williams and I co-own Burn Rubber with my business partner Roland Coit. I also deal with all brand, design and special projects for Burn Rubber. Burn Rubber is a sneaker and clothing boutique located in Metro Detroit.

How did this collaboration come about?

We have developed a relationship with the good people at New Balance from going out to the trade shows in Las Vegas. Being a long time admirer of the brand, when the opportunity presented itself to work on a NB silhouette, it was a no brainer. Burn Rubber will become a platform to raise the value of the New Balance brand in the Midwest, more specifically Detroit.

What was the inspiration behind the design?

This particular design was inspired by the culture and history of our brand and retail location. The color palette chosen is in direct correlation with our shop’s corporate colors. The materials that we went with came from different aspects of some of our favorite sneakers. Colors are not enough in today’s market — quality materials are key.

Why did you choose the MT580 model?

The MT580 is my favorite sneaker from the New Balance line. This model has received a lot of attention in Asian markets but I feel the American NB consumer is missing something. Let me give them what they are missing.

What were some surprises from the entire development process?

The process was very smooth. Before we started the process with New Balance, I had covered all the bases on what I wanted the shoe to look like. It was just a matter of sitting with the design team at NB and going over what I came up with. After a couple of samples, we were good.

What was your favorite part about designing a shoe?

I would say finding the sweet spot between color and material use. There’s a moment where everything lines up and makes sense. I live for that moment.

What else can we expect from Burn Rubber going into 2011?

2011 is going to bring brand growth and more meaningful partnership projects. I wish I could tell you what we have in the works!
