CELEBRATING 10 YEARS OF CROOKED TONGUES

Gary Warnett: Celebrating 10 Years With Crooked Tongues from hypebeast.tv on Vimeo.

In the late 1990′s, the Internet landscape was a relatively sparse one for most subcultures. Enter the year 2000 and British-based website Crooked Tongues. What started as an electronic gathering point eventually became its own brand with sneaker collaborations and now a full-fledged store. A pinnacle part of Crooked Tongues’ growth and development has been self-professed fanboy Gary Warnett. He is hands down one of the most knowledgeable personalities on footwear, B movies, blank tees, Champion and music among other random affixations. We took the opportunity to interview him at the Crooked Tongues 10th Anniversary in London a few weeks ago and gain a better understanding of Crooked Tongues’ journey.

CHRIS READ X CLASSIC MATERIAL MIXTAPE(COURTESY OF THE DIGGERS UNION.COM)

Don’t miss part one!
The second of our first month’s ‘Classic Material’ mix series documents hip hop’s progression through the years 1984 to 1987, an era in which hip hop’s prominent sound changed drastically with the increasing popularity of drum machine programmed beats and early sampling technology.
This mix leans quite heavily toward sample based material from the latter part of that era so we’ve thrown an extra treat on the CD version – a bonus mix of electro rap and electro funk from the early to mid 80s.
This mix, together with the bonus electro mix will appear on a very limited edtion C, available from Classic Material events.

SHA MONEY XL X AL LINDSTROM...PART 1

Living Extra Large: An Interview with Sha Money XL from Allindstrom.com on Vimeo.

In the first feature on our site, we sit down for a candid interview with Sha Money XL. During Part 1 of our 4 part series, Sha talks about the early G-Unit days. How he first met 50, how they started in the mixtape game, and how important that independence was. We then talk about the influence that G-Unit’s days on the indy scene had on the new generation of rappers. When asked how influential The Unit was to today’s artists, Sha said “We are the ones that started that. It used to be, mixtapes were a combination of a DJ’s favorite music from all their artists. We turned that into, ‘No!’. this is an album that we’re giving away for free”. Sha goes on to compare their mixtape run to those of his new artist on Def Jam Big K.R.I.T.

DJ MARS TO STAR ON NEW REALITY SHOW BASED ON CELEB DJ 'S

Master of the Mix marks the brand’s first venture into reality television and we couldn’t be more thrilled at the opportunity to work with some of the most influential leaders in the music industry,” said David Tapscott, Brand Director, SMIRNOFF. “SMIRNOFF has always been a part of the nightlife culture, encouraging responsible partying for years and since we’re working with some of the most influential DJs who control the night, the partnership between the two spaces feels natural to us.”
The competition kicks off at the DJ’s base camp for the show, a luxurious home in the Hollywood Hills, and quickly moves to Sin City where the DJs spin at The People’s Challenge, a massive vodka tasting event for SMIRNOFF at Tao Nightclub in Las Vegas. From there, the show follows the DJ’s from city to city – and party to party – including Miami, Los Angeles, New York and London, where contestants will put their skills to the test in a series of challenges.
Judged on their technical ability, track selection, originality, and crowd response, DJ’s will be competing for the title of Master of the Mix, as well as $250,000 in cash and prizes, including a personalized SMIRNOFF bottle. Kid Capri, who deejayed for Russell Simmons’ Def Comedy Jam and has produced sessions for Heavy D, Boogie Down Productions, and Quincy Jones, will anchor our judging booth, while notable industry veterans such as Biz Markie will make guest appearances throughout the season.
The Master of the Mix cast competing for the ultimate DJ title includes:

* DJ Mars, the DJ for Keri Hilson, Monica, Kelis, and Ne-Yo and founder of World Famous Super Friends * DJ Rap, also known as the Queen of the Turntables and first lady of Drum n: Bass, who has over three million in cumulative worldwide sales to her name, voted top female DJ in the world 7 years in a row * DJ Revolution, Los Angeles-based resident DJ for The Wakeup Show with Sway and King Tech. Rich also produced “Watchin’ Me” for Jill Scott. * DJ Scratch, New Music Seminar DJ World Champion, three-time Grammy nominated producer, third member of the legendary group EPMD. Its been 3 years today. Wow. Time flies. What started as way for few brothers and friends to keep up to date on hip-hop and other topics we deemed cool, has turned into a lifestyle epicenter for thousands of people everyday.
