Top 5 things wrong with Atlanta Nightlife X Dj Self
What's good party people, back to another week of the www.historyofmixtapes.com. I think its safe to say that the weather has finally broken for good in Atlanta. Spring//Summer is here for the duration. Which in turn means the club season is in full gear. All that being said my next topic is a question I've been asked several times. That is,"what's wrong with the club scene in the A"? I'm sure a lot of you may have been wondering the same thing. Well here's my .05 cents worth. Yup,.05 cents. I have 5 reasons why the club scene in Atlanta has fallen off.
1-The audience isnt musically aggressive. At most of the clubs, most people only want to hear what's on the radio. After a while the night becomes predictable. The radio only plays a limited amount of music, don't make the club scene the same way. If the audience opens there minds then the dj's can and will open there crates.
2-Too many unqualified participants are involved. Just because you've hacked into someones database and stole there email list doesn't make you a promoter. Just because you've got yourself a Serato set up doesn't make you a dj. Its hard to test people before they enter the game, but there are too many of those who don't belong here working here.
3-Promoters and dj's are scared of the audience. At some point you have to say f*ck what they say I'm going to make them follow me. I've seen to many promoters rush to the booth petrified because some chick told him she wanted to hear Beyonce while I was playing Biggie. If your party has value the people won't leave. If the dj knows what he's doing than he should be able to get around that curve.
4-Some promoters don't really care about there customers. I'm being totally honest with this one. They really don't offer anything in the way of value for the dollar they charge.
5-The radio controls the clubs. Radio stations in some cities are like corporate entities, once they take over the flavor vanishes. In some instances when you go out and party, you want to feel special. You don't want to feel like your at a gym jam. You don't want to feel like the entire world knows about it. I'm far from an elitist but I would like some exclusivity when I party. That's what made some of best clubs so dope, the fact that not everyone was privy to them.
I can go on for days and days about this but I'm sure you want to hear about this weeks mixtape download. Well this week we feature the "Prince of New York,Dj Self". Today Self is more of a party dj than mixtape dj, but for those of you who knew Self from day one...really know what time it is. A classic example of his best of series,we have Canibus vs. Dmx. In the 90's they had Ny street hip hop in a choke hold. A real dj,Self used to come through with the illest mixtapes. As ai say every week, download now and thank me later.

DC X STANDARD=A DOPE ASS COLLABO
Artwork by DC Shoes, Inc.
We are proud to announce our first collaboration between DC Shoes and Standard. Please stay tuned for more info
on the release of these shoes. For more views click the image above, and the press release is listed below.
After years of having their feet planted firmly in the Atlanta lifestyle market, Standard opened the doors to it’s second location in Lenox Square. To commemorate the expansion, Standard has partnered up American footwear giant DC Shoes for their first collaborative efforts. The goal in this collaboration was to represent design elements that have always been strongly present in the motif of Standard. The true red color embodies the strong presence of red accents at both locations along with the green laces and insole, which represent the artificial turf that covers the floor at the new store, as well as the live turf used at various events at the original location.

On to todays mixtape business. When you talk aout mixtapes in the south you can't talk about them with out mentioning DJ JELLY. The business model behind Dj Jelly and his Oomp Camp crew is like that of any one of the fortune 500 companies that call Atlanta home. Not only are they the biggest selling dj's in Atlanta, they are the only dj's with there own retail chain. So instead of worrying about putting tapes out on consignment. These brothers controlled there own destiny by owning 3 stores on the southwest side of Atl. Keep in mind, these stores still exist. I'm not going to get into the beef that existed on this particular Jelly tape. Let's just say as one dynasty ended, another one began. Once again, download now and thank me later!

The tragic suicide of a Springfield 11-year old was the topic of discussion Tuesday on the CNN show, Anderson Cooper 360. The segment touched on Carl's reported bullying and discussed
the taunts and threats from other students at New Leadership Charter School, who made fun of him, insulted the way he dressed and called him gay.
His mother, Sirdeaner L. Walker, has said since her son's death that, despite constant contact with the school regarding her son's bullying, nothing was done to stop it.
Walker-Hoover hanged himself at his Springfield home April 6 after complaining of bullying by classmates. His mother, Sirdeaner L. Walker, was interviewed on the program, which is followed by a discussion of childhood bullying with Thomas Krever of the Hetrick-Martin Institute in Manhattan.

he Game, is a rapper from Compton, California . He rose to fame in
2005 with the success of his debut album, The Documentary, and his two
Grammy nominations. Since then, he is considered to be a driving force
in bringing back the West Coast hip hop scene and competing with many
of his East Coast counterparts. Originally Sean Combs of Bad Boy
Records was going to sign him to his label, but The Game's mixtape
found the attention of famed producer Dr. Dre, who signed him to
Aftermath Entertainment in 2003. The rest is HISTORY.....
The Game- Put You in the Game
THE KOOL GENIUS OF RAP...!
As part of the golden-age MC-and-DJ tandem Kool G Rap & DJ Polo, the "Kool Genius of Rap" enjoyed a successful and, above all, influential run during the late '80s and early '90s before embarking on a fitful solo career. Born Nathaniel Wilson on July 20, 1968, in Queens, NY, Kool G Rap debuted in 1986 on Cold Chillin' Records with the It's a Demo/I'm Fly 12" single, produced by Marley Marl and billed to "DJ Polo & Kool G Rap" (the rapper's name would later come first, before the DJ's). A couple further singles followed — Rikers Island/Rhyme Thyme (1987), Poison (1988) — along with a Kool G Rap feature on Marley Marl's Juice Crew classic The Symphony (1988), before Kool G Rap & DJ Polo released their debut album, Road to the Riches (1989), on Cold Chillin'. Featuring each of their previously released singles, along with a couple new ones ("Road to the Riches," "Truly Yours"), Road to the Riches was a remarkable debut and proved highly influential. Two subsequent Kool G Rap & DJ Polo albums, Wanted: Dead or Alive (1990) and Live and Let Die (1991), proved similarly influential and, though they tend to be less celebrated than Road to the Riches, are widely considered classics of the genre and are arguably better albums than the duo's debut.
Kool G Rap embarked on a solo career at this point, releasing 4, 5, 6 (1995) on Cold Chillin'. He released his second solo album, Roots of Evil (1998), on Illstreet Records, for Cold Chillin' had ceased operations. The latter album was not well received, at least relative to Kool G Rap's albums on Cold Chillin', and the rapper took some time off to regroup. He returned in 2000 with a promising 12" EP for Rawkus, The Streets, and then another, My Life, in 2001. Rawkus planned to release a full-length album by Kool G Rap, The Giancana Story, in fall 2001; however, when the label was abruptly shuttered and sold to MCA Records, the album didn't get released until over a year later, in November 2002, on Koch Records. Following this unfortunate turn of events, Kool G Rap went the independent route, releasing a collaborative album, Click of Respect (2003), on Blaze the World Records. Few heard that album, which was the last release by Kool G Rap for several years. It wasn't the last heard of the rapper, though, as he popped up on guest features now and then, most memorably alongside Big Daddy Kane on both the Roots' "Boom!" (2004) and UGK's "Next Up" (2007).

Come celebrate the sounds of the city so nice they named it twice...Ny,Ny! Every neighborhood in New York has it's own distinct flavor and sound. This particular Heaven will perfectly exemplify those differences. If you lived in Spanish Harlem you may have grown up listening to Tito Puente jr. If you are from Long Island you may be a De la Soul fan. New York's musical scope spans beyond Biggie,Jay Z,and Nas. But we are going to include them too. Will you hear a bunch of reggae,of course. Are we going to dig in the crates and play some house music, hell yeah. I can go on for days and brag about how big this party is going to be. You already know that. Ill just let the music do the talking. Do yourself a favor and download theses 3 special mixes, put together by Dj Doc and myself.
DJ CLUE::THE QUESTION MARK MAN
What's good world, the games most well travelled dj is back in the building. Speaking of buildings,I had an opportunity to visit the Nike headquarters in Portland, Oregan. I've seen a lot in my lifetime but this was one of those breath taking moments. Its always a great pleasure to learn the history of things, especially those of which I am a fan of. So to learn that Nike was started with barely $1000 is amazing to me. To also find out that the second half Nike's campus was built based on the success of the Jordan brand, proved how urban culture influences the corporate structure. Big shout out to my entire Nike crew,Omar,Astor,Dawn,Reggie,Marcus,Fatz,Nina,Shannon,Dorinda,Will, and everyone else with whom I had the pleasure of kicking it while in Portland. Thanks guys!
While on facebook(Mars Hall)and twitter(djmars404),I asked a real question. What's the difference between white dj's and black dj's. The question wasn't posed in an effort to disrespect any race, creed or color. Since I consider myself a student of the game, the question was asked to simply create dialogue and to look at the game thru someone else's eyes.
In my opinion, one of the first and obvious differences is there audiences. Being on the road as much as I am gives me the opportunity to party with an eclectic mix of people. One thing I notice about the white party crowd is that they dance to anything,as long as the beat keeps going. Now of course you have to have a high level of familiarity to your mix,but its not like our clubs. The white dj has the ability to really dig in the crates. I've seen a dj in that environment go from Led Zepplin to Young Jeezy in the course of the night. Not to say that at black clubs you can't get busy either. My point is that because white people party differently than we do,it allows for a white dj to play from a wider base of music. We all know that sometimes when we go out all you here is the same 5 songs on the radio. Sometimes,in certain black clubs that's all the party people want to hear. With that mind set,we marginalize the dj. Just my observation, nothing more.
And now for todays mixtape business. Todays mixtape download comes from the Question Mark man,DJ CLUE. And yours truley,DJ MARS. Back in the early nineties record labels would pay dj's to put together promotional mixtapes for an artists up and coming release. The mixtape would feature snippets of some of the hottest songs on the project. Well today we have The Lost Boyz "Love,Peace and Nappiness" mixtape featuring DJ CLUE. Followed by the "Big Momma's House" movie sampler, hosted by me. Within the book I will attempt to pinpoint the moment when the RIAA viewed the mixtape dj as a thief as opposed to a marketing extention of the record label. Interesting thought pattern isn't it,especially when dj's were commissioned directly by the labels to produce the tapes. Well,as always you could download now and thank me later.

WEST COAST WEDNESDAYS::THE CONSCIOUS DAUGHTERS EDITION
The Conscious Daughters, who emerged in the early-'90s Bay Area
hip-hop, were a female rap duo from Oakland consisting of Carla Green
and Karryl Smith. Their 1993 debut, Ear to the Street, producing and
writing all of the tracks and (along with engineer Eric Valentine)
playing on them as well. The themes of "thug-life" sentiments was the
way of the West Coast hip-hop at the time, and distinctly women's
perspective (particularly on tracks such as "Princess of Poetry,"
"Wife of a Gangsta," and "Crazybitchmadness").
